Hello, first of all I just wanted to say that I really really did enjoy that segment. I love public television! I was really touched by the feeling portrayed when a bookstore had to close, my family owns a business so I really do know the feeling about how it is more than just a “store”. Any type of personal business is so meaningful so them and the public has a hard time comprehending that. In the film though, I did see several comments about how people these days do not have the patience that they used to for book stores, and they are lured by the click of the button. I would most definitely have to disagree. Yes, that is the case for some, but as a working, full-time college student of age 20, I really wish that that could be different. I wish I had the time to go and browse a bookstore, however, I do not have the time at all to do that. Not only that, but to not have internet access at all times while going to school these days is nearly impossible considering assignments, etc. are posted daily with online programs. So, I do not think that people do not have the patience these days, I sincerely do not think they have the time. Today our society places a huge value on how much someone is able to accomplish, or do in their daily life. A working mother that does charity work, looks amazing and puts on a great dinner party is held to the highest standard. And to me, I find it amazing that anyone is able to do that all of that by themselves. So, I think we all still love our bookstores! We love our independent restaurants and video stores and everything else! But if we can simply look up our information on the internet when we have to work in 30 min, then yes. Those bookstores cannot compete.
I love independent bookstores and I can easily see how they are so much richer than anything else, however today’s generation is not yesterday’s. More pressure’s are placed on us than ever before. So it is not that we do not have the patience, we have the patience! We do not have the time.
